March 06, 2008 - 1&1 offers APS certified applications to German customers
1 and 1 Internet and hosting firm to offer open source applications competable with the Application Packaging Standard to German-speaking hosting customers.
"Adoption of the APS standard will provide a sizeable new business opportunity for 1 and 1 and for the entire web hosting and software industries worldwide. The standard is open to everyone and will provide exciting new sales channels for hosting providers as well as other Internet service providers (ISPs). Our customers and ISVs will benefit from the expected growth of new APS-compliant applications", said Andreas Gauger, Chairman of 1 and 1 Internet Inc.
APS standard is developed and supported by Parallels. The standard is a packaging format that makes it easier for service providers to deliver hosted applications developed by independent software vendors (ISVs). APS-certified applications can be easily plugged into hosting platforms that conform to the standard.
1 and 1's new service includes open source applications, such as Joomla, PostNuke, PhpBB, SMF, Serendipity, Moodle, MediaWiki, Mantis, phpMyVisites, PHProject and WebCalendar. The company explains that APS simplifies installation and update management of web applications, and removes the need for downloads, registrations and passwords.
German customers of 1 and 1 hosting also get a Click-nBuild control panel that simplifies adding and removing applications. APS-certified applications has been added for 1 and 1 US customers in June 2007.
